Wii Fit: Another Workout Motivator

This morning I got my lazy butt out of bed and made it to Meijer at about 7:10 am. Now normally for me to get up early there has to be a damn good reason. Well today there is one. The US release of the Wii Fit.

I got there and there were signs posted that read "Line starts here for Wii Fit. We have 40 units available starting at 12:01 am". Now no one was in the line and when I checked the Nintendo case there were no units there. Ahh the horror, ahh the pain of getting up early for no reason. I tried to calm down and sought out a Meijer employee. Luckily she was only an aisle over from me.

She spoke the greatest words possible to me. "Yes they are bringing them out now for today..." Rejoice!!!  wiifit

I got one and got the hell out there, with a stop for a Non-fat, no-water Chai Tee for MrsMcbeev, and a coffee for myself.

I got home at about 7:45 am and set it up.

My first impressions is are as follows:

  • It is a nicely designed unit, heavy duty plastic all around
  • The instructions describe how to set it up well
  • The intro video is kinda boring when you are creating your Mii profile
  • The first strength conditioning exercise I did was tough!

More to come later.

Maggie playing Wii

Some things that excite me about the Wii

These are the Wii games I now own. Wii Sports is still the most fun for almost anyone to play. Mrs Mcbeev is getting too good at tennis. She can pretty much beat me whenever we play. Zelda is finally getting good after I got through the first town of learning how to play. Just give me a sword darn you nintendo! I dont need your tutorials. The control of the sword is pretty darn sweet. You slash and swipe at the air with the wiimote and Link mimics it in his virtual world. You can also fish any water, and again you use a real fishing motion to catch fish.

I bought another nunchuk and Excite Truck this morning on our quest for Wii's. We got a Wii for every member of BizStream this morning. It only took about 4 or 5 phone calls and 2 or 3 long lines, but our local Best Buy had 36 boxes, and we got 21 - 22, 25, and 27. It definitely would have sucked to be number 37. Excite Truck is very fast and furious. You drive by holding the wiimote horizontal and using it like a steering wheel. Driving games are fun very fun.

If anyone else is watching the Colts and Pats battle it out right now they are lucky. This is a very good game. Much better than that dominating win by the Bears. Im happy the Bears won dont get me wrong, but it was a boring game to watch towards the end. I think a Bears vs. Colts superbowl would be nice. I don't want this game to end. Once it does that means basically football is done for the season, outside of the superbowl. What will we watch in it's place?

First Wii Impressions and Gotcha's

The Wii is fun. That best sums up my first night playing experience. I even got Mrs Mcbeev to play a little Wii sports before she retired for the night. After that I played all of the Wii sports games, and I think I like Boxing the best. Im 4-0 and haven't been knocked down yet. I got into Zelda a little, but it was getting late and I didnt get too far.

There are a few Gotcha's though in the setup process. When you are trying to connect to your Wireless network you wa nt to make sure you are using Channel 11 or 1, and if WEP is enabled you want to use WEP Key #1. They should really tell you that right in the manual.

The other features about setting up your profile (called a Mii) are pretty nice. You create a virtual person and can change the features to your liking. Ill post what I look like when I get a chance. The weather channel is pretty cool, you can use the Wiimote to browse around the globe and get weather wherever you want. It's only 41 in Vegas today.

Now my only hope is that Maggie doesnt eat the controller or something. More to come.

About Me

I have over 11 years of experience doing this crazy web development thing mainly at BizStream. I'm passionate about software platforms and technologies that can help solve real world problems. I enjoy hanging out with my wife, chasing around my three children and vigorously rooting for the Michigan State Spartans and Detroit Lions. (I know, right? Who still roots for the Lions?)
